Bedřich Smetana (1824-1884), whose artistic legacy goes far beyond the significance of mere musical heritage, is rightly regarded as the founder of Czech national music. A leading representative of national culture and the creator of Czech national opera, he sought to professionalise musical life and was at the birth of the National Theatre.
