Smetana's diary 1841: "Jetzt will ich meine Compositionen durchgehen, d.h. ich will mir adnotieren, was ich für Stücke, und wie viel ich schon componirte. Die früheren will ich nicht anführen, weil diese noch Kinder-Compositionen ohne Grund und festen Boden sind. Nur diese merke ich an, die ich vom 16ten Jahre machte." (Now I want to go through my compositions, i.e. I want to make a note of what pieces I have composed and how many I have already composed. I will not list the earlier ones, because they are infant compositions without foundation or solid ground. I will only note these, which I composed from the age of 16.)
